What is a doula?

A doula is a trained professional who provides nonjudgmental, evidence-based support to laboring mothers and their partners. This assistance includes both emotional and physical help to facilitate labor, position the baby optimally, and prepare the mother and family. Additionally, having doula significantly decreases the chances of requiring a cesarean section.

What a doula is not.

Doulas are not healthcare providers and do not engage in clinical tasks like fetal monitoring, vaginal exams, or vital sign checks. While we don’t provide medical advice, we can assist you in formulating the right questions for your healthcare provider Additionally, doulas do not replace your partner; instead, we support and empower them to better assist you during labor.

Why should I hire a doula?

Research shows that having a doula during pregnancy and labor is linked to a....

  • 25% decrease in the risk of Cesarean; the largest effect was seen with a doula (39% decrease)*

  • 8% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth; the largest effect was seen with a doula (15% increase)*

  • 10% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief; the type of person providing continuous support did not make a difference

  • Shorter labors by 41 minutes on average; there is no data on if the type of person providing continuous support makes a difference

  • 38% decrease in the baby’s risk of a low five minute Apgar score; there is no data on if the type of person providing continuous support makes a difference

  • 31% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience; mothers’ risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience was reduced with continuous support provided by a doula or someone in their social network (family or friend), but not hospital staff

While obtaining a certification is not mandatory to be a practicing doula, investing in quality training shows commitment and provides a certain level of knowledge. I have completed the Birth and Postpartum doula certification program through Paradigm Doulas and Texas Food Handlers saftey. I am also currently in the process of completing thee Nurturely Perinatal Coach and Advocacy program and the Baby Steps for Child Birth Education. I also participate in various  herbalism classes such as those with Herbal Academy that allow me to continue to expand on my knowledge and skills in order to best serve my community.

Are you certified? What training do you have?
Does a doula only provide support for natural births?

No. As your doula, I am here to support you regardless of the type of birth you choose. Whether it's a home birth, birth center, or hospital—medicated or unmedicated—my goal is to help you achieve the birth you desire while ensuring you feel safe, supported, and informed. Want to give birth at home? Let's make it happen! Planning a hospital birth? Great choice! Need a scheduled c-section? I'm with you! I can assist in creating a birth plan that focuses on family-centered care. Considering an epidural? No problem! As your doula, I can guide you in positions to help progress labor along Choosing an unmedicated birth? You can do it! I’m here to help with pain management. Doulas are for everyone, and they support every type of birth..

What if I can't afford a doula?

I believe that every woman should have the birth experience she wants, with a team committed to helping her achieve her goals. Although hiring a doula isn't required, it a worthwhile investment that provides many advantages for the mother. I am happy to explore different payment plans and options to ensure this support is within reach.

Do I need a doula if I have a birth partner?

A doula's role is to seamlessly integrate into your birth team, enhancing rather than overshadowing your and your partner's experiences. Many birth partners wish to be actively involved during labor and birth, and a doula's expertise can help them feel more at ease, especially if they become anxious seeing their partner in pain. At times, we step back and guide the birth partner in providing physical comfort, such as assisting the mother changing positions, offering back rubs, or helping her stay focused during contractions. Our goal is never to diminish the birth partner's role, and we discuss this during your first prenatal appointment, aiming to make this one of the most memorable moments as you welcome your little one.

Why should I hire a postpartum doula?
When does my doula join me in labor?

You might believe that a postpartum doula isn't necessary with family eager to visit and care for the baby. However, the primary reason many parents hire a postpartum doula is to provide you with relaxation and uninterrupted bonding time with your little one! A postpartum doula offers flexible support, including cooking cleaning, and even overnight assistance to ensure you get the rest you need. My goal is to help you feel as comfortable as possible so you can truly enjoy this special time.

The response to this question can differ among doulas. Some prefer to wait until you are in active labor, typically when contractions are 4-5 minutes apart and lasting a minute. Others may arrive as soon as their clients feel they need support, which could be around 1cm. Personally, I prefer to be there when my client requires me. I can meet you at home or at your chosen place of birth, depending on how quickly your labor unfolds and your comfort with staying at home during labor.

What if my birth doesn't go as planned?

I will be by your side from the moment labor begins until welcome your little one. Occasionally, your preferred birth plan may require some changes. Whether you're birthing at home, a birth center, or a hospital, I am here to support you. If things don’t go as planned, I will assist you with hospital transfers, manage any necessary interventions, and help you process your birth experience during the postpartum period.
